UTE PÅ SJÖN

Gay openness and zones of freedom in maritime history

The tour focuses on historical sites and contexts where men working at sea could be open with their homosexuality. At the turn of the 20th century, the Navy's bathhouse was depicted by the artist Eugène Jansson as a sun-glittering display of male beauty. A few decades later, Ocean liners became a special zone where gay men could live openly. Ships are cultural symbols of freedom and adventure, but also of masculinity and nationalism. Sailors are idealized and become homoerotic objects. How common was homosexuality among sailors? And what about the myth of the sailor who has a girl in every port?
