Gender is not consent
Pride House, Sat 7 Aug 12:00 PM–12:45 PM
Our understanding of sexuality should not be limited to an idea of genders or “biological sexes”.
More and more people agree that each of us have the rights to our own bodies, and that consent is therefore what makes a sexual act right or wrong. However, this has not always been the case. Each person's body used to be considered the property of the church, government and family. As people were breaking free from this oppression, they based much of their rebellion on ideas of gender. As liberating as this may have been a century ago, it also held a lot of potential to oppress persons of all genders and of all sexualities: The secularized heteronormativity which replaced old theocratic normativity marginalized trans people, cis women and non-conforming cis men as well as homosexuals and all everyone who's sexuality is based on other factors than gender. To move beyond this dead-end structure, we should abolish all three layers of heteronormativity: Get rid of the notion that everyone must have a binary gender, as well as the notion that each person's sexuality must be based on gender or a division of “biological sex” - we must not be content to remove only the top layer, the sacralization of heterosexuality and demonization of homosexuality in a false dichotomy between vanilla cisgendered heterosexuality and either everything else in general or vanilla cisgendered homosexuality in particular. Through breaking this false dichotomy, we also break the false assumptions of what a “real man” or “real woman” is expected to do or consent to.
